Astronomical Observatory of Joseph Le Paute D'agelet

On February 27, 1787 the French ships Boussole and L'astrolabe dispatched on a scientific mission anchored at Cavite. A temporary observatory was set up in the garden of the residence of the Cavite commandant where the astronomer, Joseph Le Paute D'agelet, determined the latitude of Cavite with a quadrant of three feet radius and the longititude of Cavite by means of lunar distances and rate of chronometers. The ships were later lost in the South Pacific with all hands on board.
