DECLARING THE HISTORIC TOWN CENTER OF MALOLOS IN BULACAN A NATIONAL HISTORICAL LANDMARK
WHEREAS, the Constitution of tlie Philippines provides that “the State shall promote and popularize the nation’s historical and cultural heritage and resources;”
WHEREAS, Presidential Decree No. 2(50 dated August 1, 1973, specifically vested the National Historical Institute with the power to declare sites and structures as national historical landmarks;
WHEREAS, the town of Malolos in Bulacan played a significant role during the Filipino propaganda, nationalist and revolutionary movements of the Spanish colonial period, when its men and women figured as key and vital players in the propagation of nationalist sentiments and activities;
WHEREAS, Malolos become the capital of the First Philippine Republic under Emilio Aguinaldo from September 1898 to March 1899, dius becoming the political and administrative hub where many of the town’s structures, including the Convent of Malolos, the Church of Barasoain and the houses of its prominent residents, were converted into offices for the different departments of the Malolos Republic;
WHEREAS, Malolos retains to this day at its historic town center many ancestral houses and other old buildings, which are well-preserved and living testimonies to die town’s historic and cultural past and to the ideals, bravery and greatness of the sons and daughters of Malolos;
WHEREAS, the structures at the town center of Malolos reflect the rich and varied evolution of architectural styles from die Spanish to die American periods, reflecting the artistry, ccaflsnuuiship and ingenuity of its builders;
NOW THEREFORE, the National Historical Institute, by virtue of the powers vested in it by Presidential Decree No. 260, hereby declares or designates, as a National Historical Landmark and a Heritage Town, the historic town center of Malolos covered by the following areas: Pasco del Congreso from the Church of Barasoain to Old Malolos Bridge; P.Burgos Street bounded by Enriquez Street and Old Malolos Bridge; Hipolito Street bounded by P. Burgos Street and Enriquez Street; Cigarrilla Street; Pariancillo Street; Santo Niño Street; F.T. Reyes Street bounded by Santo Niño Street and M. Tengco Street; M. Tengco Street bounded by F.T. Reyes Street and F. Estrella Street; F. Estrella Street bounded by Liyang River and Kanto Boy Street; including the Santiago- Cruz House at Jarino Street, the Pineda House and Aldaba House at F.T. Reyes Street, the Water Cistern and Old Malolos Bridge.
