Built by the Augustinians in 1756 made of wood and thatch, under the patronage of King Fernando III of Castile.
During the Philippine Revolution of 1898, Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo viewed the Philippine Revolutionary Army from the church’s convent.
The Philippine Revolutionary Army burned the church on May 4, 1899. It was again destroyed by fire in 1939.
The current church was designed by Arch. Fernando Ocampo, the same architect of the re-constructed Manila Cathedral in Intramuros.
