Caluya was a poet laureate. He is the composer of the acclaimed Ilocano Song "Bannatiran", a bird describe by Caluya as "Kalilibnosan"— most perfect, hyperbolically beautiful. He also wrote many poems in Ilocano including a translation of Rizals "Mi Ultimo Adios" which is considered the most lyrical Ilocano version of the poem.
