Spanish FortressSpanish Fortress is a Registered Property, Province of Cagayan located at Tuao, Cagayan, Region II.
The site has an estimated land measurement of 32 meters x 40 meters acquiring the squared shape which appears to be the central point of the fortress. The other part connected to the central point which is a narrow portion covers 12 meters x 15 meters. Moreover, the fortress is made up of molasses and river stones strongly piled with a length of 3 meters & width 1.5 meters from the ground creating a standing structure with an estimated more than 300 years of existence considering 2 major earthquakes to damage the site.
The people were asked to bring river stones during church service. The river stones were used to build the fortress through force labor.
According to Kagawad Tito Cauilan, an 84 yrs. old citizen of Tuao , the fortress had been built for the Spaniards and the community to hide from the head hunters known as “bolo men” during the Spanish regime. The bolo men were group of head hunters from the mountains and some were known to be a ‘’kalinga people” pronounced as “Ka-ling-ga.”
