Diocese of Nueva Segovia

The Diocese of Nueva Segovia, which was founded on 14 August 1599 through the efforts of Bishop Domingo de Salazar Madrid and by virtue of a brief issued by Pope Clement VII had its first seat in Lal-lo, Cagayan. When it was transferred to Vigan it occupied a building, which escaped capture by the rebels when Diego Silang, who had defeated the bishop’s forces was killed by Vicos in 1763.
The present building, which was built in 1783-1790, also housed the ecclesiastical court until 1890, was occupied by the revolutionists, who imprisoned Bishop Jose Hevia Campomanes in it, from 1896 until 1899; and was used as a garrison by the American forces under Lt. Col. James Park, 45th Infantry, U.S.A.
