This site was formerly occupied by three Jesuit educational institutions: the Real y Pontifica Universidad de San Ignacio 1589-1768: the Colegio de San Jose founded in 1510 by Esteban Rodriguez de Figueroa; and the Real Colegio de San Felipe de Austria founded by Governor Corcuera in 1640 and abolished by Governor Fajardo in 1644.
