Bataan Death March Kilometer 44 is a Registered Property, Province of Bataan located at Balanga City, Bataan, Region III.
This landmark can be seen at the Plaza Mayor de Balanga, the main assembly point of Filipinos and American soldiers who were forced to march from Bagac and Mariveles. On this spot and in many other open spaces in Balanga, captives stagger in from April 11 up to the end of the month in groups of up to 100. Packed seated on their haunches, elbow to elbow they were given a brief rest, half a cup of rice and saft as their meal after 2 to 4 days of marching. For weeks, this Town Plaza reeks of the smell of sweat, dried blood, dysentery and corpses. Along the way to Balanga, many died of disease, wounds, dehydration and exhaustion. Many were killed for not keeping up with
march due to fatigue, falling out of line to drink ditch water by the wayside. About 650 Americans and around 10, 000 Filipinos died in the Death March in four weeks.
