Gabriela Silang is popularly known as the "Joan of Arc" of Ilocos. She led the Ilocanos' resistance against the Spaniards in 1763 after her husband, Diego Silang, was treacherously killed on May of the same year.
There are two monuments recognizing the bravery of Gabriela- this one located at the Welcome Park before the Tangadan Tunnel in San Quintin, Abra while the other stands as the town plaza of Pigidan to remind everyone of the gallant stand and ideals she and her husband had fought and died for.
