Abuan River is a Registered Property, City of Ilagan, Isabela located at Ilagan City, Isabela, Region II.
The Abuan River, which has an average elevation of 82 meters above sea level, used to have a pristine water before Typhoon Tisoy in 2019 making it ideal for water activities such as swimming, rafting and kayaking. After the typhoon, its water turned brown which was caused by the severe flooding and landslide that hit the city.
For decades the river has been the route of “bugadors” (timber haulers) to transport illegally cut logs from the forest to Ilagan. To give these timber haulers and their community an alternative livelihood, World Wildlife Fund-Philippines (WWF-Philippines) in partnership with Coca-Cola Philippines, with the support of the local government, conducted a project called the Umbrella Project which aimed to help the government clean, conserve and save Abuan River and make it a sustainable whitewater rafting spot and an ecotourism destination in the city.
