The Parish was erected on August 25, 1954. The Rev. Fr. Roman G. Rayos was the first Parish Priest. The Parish was placed under the patronage of St. Anthony of Padua.
The church and convent construction started in 1949 under the able management of the community chaplain, Rev. Fr. Roman G. Rayos. Fr. Dominador Galicia was the second pastor.
Mercedes was formerly known as Barra, so called because of its sand-bar. The change of name was effected to honor the late Doña Mercedes, a big property owner of this place. She was truly a virtuous woman who had a soft spot in her heart for the poor and the unfortunate, thus, worthy of the honor accorded her. (Diocese of Daet)
