Abolition of Tobacco Monopoly
Government tobacco monopoly formally established March 1782 by Governor Jose Basco y Vargas by virtue of the Royal Decree of 9 February 1780.
While this monopoly increased government revenue and stimulated the tobacco industry, it led to many abuses by the government officials.
Abolished in 1882 by the Royal Decree of 25 June 1881 during the incumbency of Governor Fernando Primo de Rivera.
Erected by the people as an expression of joy over the abolition of the tobacco monopoly.
